Visitation: Will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday morning, August 01, 2009 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 9:30 a.m. to service time, to greet visitors.

Sloan King, son of George and Edith Phillips King was born January 19, 1911, on a farm in Warren County, Iowa, near Indianola. Sloan started school at the age of 8 and went to many different schools before his1933 graduation from Norwalk High School. Sloan married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Luray Feight, November 30, 1934. They made their home in Beech, Iowa, where they lived with Sloan’s parents. They later moved to Milo, Iowa, where they lived for a short time, before moving back to Beech. Sloan farmed near Beech and also had dairy cows. While living in Beech, Sloan also served on the school board, taught Sunday school, and drove a school bus. He helped put in the lines for electricity in the farming community and was the first farmer to practice soil conservation in Warren County. In 1950, Sloan moved to Searsboro where he farmed and worked nights at Ideal Manufacturing in Oskaloosa. In 1956, they sold the farm and moved to University Park. Sloan continued to work for Ideal and eventually became the assistant plant manager. He retired at age 67. Over the years, Sloan built several homes; he enjoyed golf into his 90’s, playing cards and also enjoyed day trips around Iowa and Missouri. He moved to the assisted living area of the Perry Lutheran Home Dec. 31, 2004.

Sloan is survived by his three daughters: Carol King Sparks of Lees Summit, Missouri; Gaynelle Tice of Perry, Iowa; and Aprile Goodman of Ottumwa, Iowa; a son, Jack King of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren include: Carol’s children: Lu Ann Stych, Debra Patterson, Tammy Sparks Horton, and Jay Lee Sparks; Gaynelle’s children: Cheri Scheib, Tony Tice, Nancy Tice Graney, and Mike Tice; Aprile’s children: Matthew Goodman, Isaac Goodman, and Jenny Goodman; Jack’s children: Cooper King, La Ray King Prudencio, Brady Treanor, Gerry Treanor Brown; and Gerald’s child: Kristin King Bates; His great-grandchildren include: Carol’s grandchildren:, Brett Paulsen, Angie Paulsen Phillips, Jason Hewitt, Aaron Patterson, and Virgil Sparks; Gaynelle’s grandchildren: Blake Scheib, Kelli Scheib, Bonnie Wright, Ian Tice, Megan Graney Martin, Molly Graney Rowe, Daniel Graney, Emily Tice, Grant Tice, and Mason Tice; Aprile’s grandchildren: Harmony Pace, Greta Goodman, Ailie Goodman; Jack’s grandchildren, Wesley Prudencio, Cannon Brown, Shaefer Brown; and Gerald’s grandchildren: Haden Bates and Norah Bates; Sloans’s great-great-grandchildren include: Carol’s great-grandchildren: Kenadi Phillips and Ridley Phillips; Gaynelle’s great-grandchildren: Olivier Tice and Gabe Wright.

Sloan is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Arlene Feight King, and two sons Gerald Sloan King and Farol King.
