Edward A. Smith, son of Norval and Nedra Jane Andree Smith, was born November 7, 1954 in Cherokee, Oklahoma. His father’s work in the ministry took the family to Enid, OK and then in 1960 to Marshalltown, Iowa; there Ed attended elementary and junior high school. His father’s position with William Penn College took the family to Oskaloosa in 1968; there, Edward finished junior high and Oskaloosa High School in 1973. Ed then attended William Penn College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1978. He began his career in Centerville, Iowa where he taught remedial reading for 17 years. Ed furthered his education at Indian Hills Community College earning a degree in computer systems networking. He went on to be employed by McLeod Communications and most recently by Verizon Communications. |
Ed was a member of the College Avenue Friends Church. He enjoyed climbing, particularly Multnoma Falls near Portland, OR; he also enjoyed flying kites over the ocean and he was an avid Richard Petty fan. Like his parents, Ed was a collector; his favorite collections included bulldogs, whales and most recently Iowa farm toys. |
Ed’s family includes his mother, Nedra Jane Smith of Oskaloosa; a brother, Duane A. Smith of Berea, KY; two nephews: Jeremiah and Isaiah Smith; an uncle, Gordon (Joan) Smith of Wichita, KS; cousins: Gil and Pam Smith, Shelby and Shawna Smith, and Greg and Gail Smith; close friends: Jacque James and family; Arthur, Becki, Lia and Evan LaBrant of Vancouver; and Ron and Sue Keller of Centerville.
