Interment: As was his wish, John's body has been cremated. His ashes will be interred at Coal Creek Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. |
John passed away Monday evening at the Mahaska Hospital. |
John Ross Mattix was born August 14, 1918 at home in rural Beacon, Iowa to Winfred A. and Lulu May Mattix. John was a graduate of Riverside Country School and then attended Oskaloosa High School. He was inducted to the U.S. Army, June 27, 1944, and was honorably discharged, November 24, 1944. He married Opal Irene Newell, April 21, 1983, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In John’s early career he held a number of truck driving positions, driving for Ready-Mix and also driving as a gasoline transporter. From 1969 until his retirement in 1987, he owned and operated the Union Tavern in Oskaloosa. John enjoyed truck driving, fishing, mushroom hunting, shooting pool and horseshoe throwing. John was an avid Cubs fan, loved his dog - Lamar, and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a member of The American Legion in Oskaloosa.

John is survived by his wife, Opal Mattix of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife, John D. and Ann Mattix of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Charlotte Augspurger and Ruth Ann Lage both of Altoona; two stepsons: Stephen Hols of Oskaloosa and David Hols and his wife Kimberly of Runnells; a stepdaughter and her husband, Dianne and Dean Taylor of Prairie City; eleven grandchildren: 19 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren; his brother, Dwight and his wife Mary Mattix of Issaquah WA and his sister-in-law, Mary Mattix of Oskaloosa, Iowa. |
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Don and Ralph Mattix: a sister, Ruth Mattix Rodabaugh and a great grandson, David Augspurger.
