Louise Hicklin, daughter of Perry Edward and Goldie Smith Chilcote was born July 28, 1919 in Truax, Iowa. She was a graduate of the Riverside School, a country school in Mahaska County. For several years following her graduation she worked for families in her neighborhood doing housework. She enrolled in the Ottumwa Academy Beauty School in the fall of 1946 and graduated in the fall of 1947. Following her education, she was employed at Taylor’s Barber & Beauty Shop, owned by Harold Doggett. She worked there for 21 years. April 12, 1952, she was united in marriage to Bob Hicklin at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa by the Reverend Dwight Walker. In 1967, Louise opened her own shop, Louise’s Kut & Kurl. She owned and operated the shop for 19 years, retiring in the fall of 1986. Louise will always be remembered as being very accommodating to her customers’ schedules, sometimes meeting them before and after regular business hours. Louise enjoyed meeting and talking with people, so in 1990 she went back to work at Wal-Mart as a greeter. She worked there for 10 years, retiring in 2000. Louise also enjoyed traveling, camping, flower gardening, and spending time at home. Many of her friends will remember Louise as being a wonderful seamstress who made many of her own clothes and enjoyed doing sewing favors for them. |
Her family includes her husband, Bob Hicklin of Oskaloosa; a brother, Lewis & Genevieve Chilcote of Oskaloosa; a sister, Phyllis & Marvin Loynachan of Knoxville and several nieces and nephews. |
Besides her parents, Louise was preceded in death by a brother, Willis Chilcote; a sister, Marcella Dykstra; a nephew, and a great niece. |
Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House. |
