Visitation: Will begin after 4:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon, March 26, 2009 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel, the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday morning, March 27, 2009 at St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ with Reverend Liz Colton officiating.
Interment: Forest Cemetery

Maxine passed away Monday afternoon at the Oskaloosa Care Center at the age of 101 years, 4 months and 17 days.

Maxine Lyon Mathew, daughter of Orin & Fannie McCord Lyon was born Nov. 6, 1907 in Oskaloosa. She was a 1925 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and a 1929 graduate of William Penn College, that year she was also Wm. Penn’s May Day Queen. She did advanced graduate studies at Drake University and The University of Iowa. Maxine married Bruce E. Mathew June 16, 1937 in Oskaloosa. She was a lifelong resident of Oskaloosa and served the Oskaloosa School System for 32 years. She taught 31 years at Whittier and retired from there as a 5th grade teacher. Maxine was a member of St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ and it’s Women’s’ Association; Delta Kappa Gamma, Oskaloosa Women’s Club; and P.E.O. Chapter X, where she was currently the oldest member, initiated in 1942. Maxine served as a board member for the YWCA for six years and was a life time member of the Mahaska County Historical Society. Maxine enjoyed music throughout her life, in her younger years she was active in her church choir and she also was an accomplished pianist and organist. She and Bruce loved to travel, visiting every continent, except India.

Maxine is survived by her extended family, cousins: Don & Betty Parlet of Oskaloosa, Russell & Mardell Corning of San Raphael, CA; a niece, Linda (Kirk) Dodge of Overland Park, Kansas and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother in infancy, and her husband, Bruce and a cousin Lois Franklin

Memorials may be made to the Maxine Lyon Mathew Scholarship fund at William Penn University or to St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ.
