Sophia passed away Sunday evening at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 100 years, nine months and nineteen days of age. |
Sophia Christina Nelson was born June 3, 1908 on a farm near Brandt, South Dakota to Anton and Mary Stefferud Anderson. Sophia was the youngest of seven children and attended country school near Brandt. She was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt and was a longtime member of Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto, SD. Sophia was united in marriage to Alton B. Nelson on June 22, 1932 in Brandt. They made their home in Toronto, SD where they operated a restaurant for several years. She enjoyed her large garden, baking and spending time with her family. She moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1980. When Alton passed away in 1983, she moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to family. Sophia has been a resident of a nursing home since 1994.

Sophia’s family includes daughter-in-law, Beverly Nelson of Carrollton, TX; son and daughter-in-law, David and Julene Nelson of St. Paul, MN; daughters and son-in-law: Mary and Larry Anderson of Oskaloosa and Nancy Nelson of San Diego, CA; thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and two step great grandchildren.

Besides her husband and her parents, Sophia was preceded in death by a son, Alton, Jr., two brothers, four sisters and two great grandchildren.
