Martin Paul Stursma, son of Ryn and Marie Simons Stursma, was born January 5, 1939 in Pella, Iowa. He was a graduate of Pella Christian Grade School. As a young man he worked for Ray Klyn Tire in Pella. Paul was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Bogaards May 30, 1958 in Pella. He purchased the brake and alignment portion of Ray Klyn Tire and opened Paul’s Brake and Alignment in Pella. December 14, 1961 he was inducted into the US Army. He was discharged as Private First Class on December 13, 1963. After his discharge he returned to the Pella area and farmed NW of Leighton until 1973. At that time he and Shirley purchased their own farm south of Leighton, where they still maintain a home. Paul was a member of the Leighton Christian Reformed Church where he served as deacon, taught Sunday school and led young adult’s groups. He loved to fish, spend time out of doors and with his family. He also enjoyed working in his farm shop making windmills, weathervanes and various other metal sculptures.
