Helen Goodwin Walton, age 97, passed on Tuesday November 18, 2008 at Northern Mahaska Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. |
Helen was born April 6, 1911 in Des Moines, Iowa to Harry Pierce Goodwin and Elsie Wiringa Goodwin. After living in several Iowa towns as a child, she moved to Oskaloosa in 1921 and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1928. Helen worked for the International Harvester Company and for the State of Iowa Welfare Service in Oskaloosa during the Great Depression. She married Robert H. Walton on July 2, 1937 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Helen filled in valuably as a bookkeeper for the Walton Insurance Agency during World War II while her husband, Bob, served in the U.S. Navy.

Helen was an avid golfer in her early years and won the Elmhurst Country Club ladies golf championship in 1950, 1951 and 1959. She enjoyed painting and was a member of the committee that created Art on the Square in Oskaloosa. Helen became an accomplished artist working in both watercolors and oils. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and a 64-year member of Chapter IO of PEO, having been a charter member in 1944. Helen was also a loyal member of St. James Episcopal Church and sang in the choir for over forty years. She loved working crossword puzzles and was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan. Though her hearing and eyesight were diminished in later years, Helen remained mentally sharp to the end and loved to talk politics with family and friends.

Her family includes a son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Ruth Walton of Oskaloosa, a grandson, Ryan Walton, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, August 26, 1989, and by her parents.
