Marty passed away Friday evening at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 3 days.

Marilyn “Marty” Maxine Brackney, daughter of George and Mary Rickett Perry, was born May 2, 1930 in Knoxville, Iowa. Marty’s family moved to Oskaloosa when she was 4 years of age. She was a 1948 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and August 1, 1948, she was united in marriage to Delbert Brackney at the First Christian Church. She and Delbert made their home in Oskaloosa and Marty went to work at the Thriftway Grocery Store. Marty and Delbert were blessed with three children and Marty was able to stay at home with them when they were young. She returned to working outside the home at Snyder’s Clothing Store and later started the Audio/Visual Department for the Oskaloosa High School. She eventually transferred to the high school library. She worked a total of 28 years at the High School before retiring in 1996. Marty was a member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed all sports, especially golf and tennis; she was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs and will be remembered as a faithful Oskaloosa High School Booster Club Member and fan. Marty loved life; she had a ready smile and her many friends remember her infectious laugh and her great sense of humor.

Marty’s family includes her husband of over 60 years, Delbert Brackney of Oskaloosa; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Lisa Brackney of Oskaloosa; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Merle Lyons of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; a son-in-law, David Hopkins of Cape Coral, FL; seven grandchildren: Kim Hopkins, Matt Hopkins, Kelli Brackney, Stacey Fritz, Becca Freeman, Jeromy Lyons, Jennifer Burns; and nine great grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Hopkins.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
