Mae passed away Friday evening at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa from a stroke she suffered earlier that day. She was 78 years, 8 months and 29 days of age.

Wilma Mae Van Arkel, daughter of Matthew and Gertrude Kloosterman Van Arkel, was born October 27, 1929. She attended school in rural Oskaloosa and completed her education in Oskaloosa. Mae married Andrew Vandegeest February 4, 1947 in Beacon, Iowa. She began working as an office manager for her husband at Van’s Fertilizer, a business which evolved into Oskaloosa Grain. She remained active in the business until the time of her death. She was a member of Central Reformed Church, where she had served as an Elder, an Adult Sunday School Teacher, and president of the Women’s Guild. She was currently involved with the Alpha Program (an outreach program) at her church. She loved the church; especially the music; her steadfast dedication to her church was due to her unwavering faith in the love, goodness and ever present guidance of her heavenly father. She believed that God had a plan for her life and passing on that knowledge and hope to everyone her life touched was her greatest joy. Mae was also a member of After Five (a social Christian woman’s group), Circle of Friends and was a past 4-H leader.

Her family includes her son and daughter-in-law, Daryl & Gwen Vandegeest of Oskaloosa; her daughters and son-in-law: Jan & Ron Padgett of Oskaloosa and Jeanine (Vandegeest) Pierce of Newton, Kansas; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a sister, Bea (Milt) Binford of Bellavista, AR and her brother, Calvin (Marilyn) Van Arkel of Oskaloosa.

Besides her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her husband Andy on August 29, 2003; a granddaughter, Amie Lynn Vandegeest; three sisters-in-law: Margaret Humble, Ruth Vande Geest and Marjorie Vande Geest and three brothers-in-law: Lynn Gosselink, Gerrit Vande Geest and Warren Humble.

Memorial may be made to Central Reformed Church Outreach Programs or to Crisis Intervention Services.
