Jacoba Wilhelmina “Cora” Van Kooten daughter of Henry and Cornelia Schutt Van Kooten was born April 30, 1910 at Apeldoorn, province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. That same year, at the age of three months, she accompanied her parents, five brothers and five sisters to the United States of America, settling in northwest Iowa, near Alton. They later moved to central Iowa. Cora was part of a family which included 16 living children.
Cora professed her faith at the Sully Christian Reformed Church. She later met and married John Bruxvoort, December 28, 1928. To this union was born two children. She & John began farming in the Lynnville vicinity and later moved to the Sandridge area, between Sully and Pella. It was in 1937, she joined with others and became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. In 1941, John and Cora purchased a farm west of Oskaloosa and Cora was employed at the “Children’s Carousel Toggery” in Oskaloosa. They moved to the city of Oskaloosa in 1953 and purchased the Oskaloosa Bible and Book Store. It was during these years, John and Cora learned to appreciate fellow Christians of the surrounding area. Later, after selling the store, Cora remained employed there for some time.

Cora enjoyed neighborhood and community activities, family and music were her favorites. Her greatest love was always with the church where she was an active member and where she participated regularly.
