| Visitation: Will begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday morning, April 23, 2008 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. to greet friends and relatives. |
| Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday morning, April 24, 2008 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Reverend Stephen Mathison-Bowie of the First Christian Church officiating. |
Interment: Forest Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Harry L. Anderson Post #34 of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans Post #21 and the Veterans of Foriegn Wars Post #2237. |
Vern passed away Monday evening at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House at the age of 74 years. |
LaVerne Dewayne Stewart, son of Walter and Maxine J. Simms Stewart, was born January 22, 1934 in rural Albia, Iowa. He was a 1953 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. He served 23 years in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1954 to 1977. Vern was united in marriage to Sandra Lee Phillippe October 4, 1957 at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. His first job was with John Morral Company in Ottumwa; he then worked as a sales associate for McGregors Furniture Store in Oskaloosa. From 1971 to 1996 he was a sales representative in southeast Iowa for Lowy Distributors, a floor covering company based out of Ankeny, IA. Following his retirement in 1996, he was able to devote more time to his hobbies: woodworking, antiquing and attending flea markets, building bird houses and spending time with his grandchildren. Vern was a member of Council Lodge 644 and attended the First Christian Church. |
His family includes his wife, Sandra Stewart of Oskaloosa; his sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Kristen Stewart of Cedar Falls, IA and Scott and Diane Stewart of Oskaloosa, IA; his grandchildren: Jenna and Jamie Stewart of Oskaloosa and Kara and Conner Stewart of Cedar Falls, IA; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Ernest Stewart; Larry and Pat Stewart and Grace Stewart, all of Oskaloosa; and several nieces and nephews. |
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Kenneth and Dwight Stewart and a sister-in-law, Joyce Stewart. |
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund or the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. |
